Regular beekeeping operations and interference with research:

Bee colonies may require regular maintenance during the duration of your experiment (beetle trapping, mite treatments, honey harvesting,…) please outline what would be acceptable and what should be avoided, noting that for long experiments, some will be required by regulations or to prevent major issues (e.g., honey-bound colonies, slime-outs etc).

Will your research involve sensitive equipment on site?

Will your research interfere with whipper-snipping?

Will your research require significant power?

Will your research require you to modify hives (e.g. drilling holes)?

Will your research require you to change queens?

Do you have any other comments regarding interference with apiary management?

Simultaneous use by other researchers

Will your research require exclusive access to the hives, or can the RATAC contact you regarding occasional sampling by other researchers? (E.g. you study long-term pesticide effects in hives, and a researcher requires occasional sampling of mites or beetles from the trays under the hives.)

Briefly describe what would be acceptable in terms of occasional sampling (opening hives, collecting bees from the entrance, collecting samples of pests and disease from under hive trays).

If any requests for occasional sampling occur, the RATAC will first contact you to confirm this will not significantly interfere with your experiments.
